Reviving Kadambrayar: Kochi’s Upcoming Eco-Tourism Hotspot
For years, the serene beauty of Kadambrayar in Kizhakkambalam village, on the outskirts of Kochi, remained overlooked. Despite its breathtaking landscapes—lush greenery and shimmering emerald waters—the area was neglected, with eco-tourism revival plans stuck in bureaucratic delays. At one point, the lack of development even made it a hotspot for anti-social activities.
However, change is finally on the horizon. The District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) has launched an ambitious project to transform Kadambrayar into a thriving tourist destination. With a range of new attractions, including a revamped walkway, boating facilities, an eco-friendly restaurant, an open gym, and a children’s play area, the once-forgotten waterway is set to become a must-visit spot for locals and tourists alike.
A New Vision for Kadambrayar
The DTPC has included Kadambrayar in its list of emerging tourist destinations in Ernakulam district. The revival plan, spearheaded by Kunnathunad MLA P V Srinijin, has received administrative approval, paving the way for rapid development.
“We proposed a ₹3.5 crore package during the Nava Kerala Sadas, and administrative sanction is expected soon. Additionally, we plan to secure ₹1 crore from the tourism department to fast-track the project,” said DTPC Secretary Lijo Joseph.
Key Attractions in the Pipeline
1. Boating & Kayaking – The waterway, currently clogged with water hyacinths, will soon be dredged to facilitate boating activities. Coracles, paddle boats, and motorboats will offer visitors a unique experience.
2. Cable Car Project – In collaboration with Wonderla Amusement Park, the DTPC is exploring the possibility of introducing a cable car ride, enhancing the area’s adventure tourism potential.
3. Island Dining Experience – A unique open-air dining facility on a nearby island will allow visitors to enjoy meals while surrounded by nature, accessible via traditional country boats.
4. Upgraded Walkway & Hanging Bridges – The existing 1.2-km walkway between Manakkakadavu and Puthussery Kadavu will be relaid and illuminated with decorative lighting, making it ideal for morning and evening strolls.
5. Eco-Restaurant & Health Hub – A fully operational restaurant, serving health drinks and local cuisine, will cater to early-morning walkers and late-night visitors.
Targeting Kochi’s IT Crowd
One of the primary goals of this initiative is to attract professionals from Infopark, Kochi’s bustling IT hub. With nearly one lakh employees working in the vicinity—and the upcoming Infopark Phase-3 nearby—Kadambrayar is poised to become a perfect weekend escape for techies seeking relaxation amid nature.
“We want to create a space where people can unwind, enjoy water sports, and experience nature without traveling far,” said MLA Srinijin.
Ensuring Safety & Sustainability
To prevent the resurgence of anti-social elements, the DTPC has implemented several measures:
- Restricted Entry Timings – The area will be accessible only from 5 AM to 11 PM.
- Increased Police Patrolling – Authorities will conduct regular night patrols to ensure safety.
- People’s Committee – A local committee will oversee maintenance and security.
A Long-Awaited Revival
The Kadambrayar eco-tourism project was first proposed in 2009 but remained stagnant for over a decade. Located between Kakkanad and Palikkara, close to Wonderla, the site has three main entry points:
- Manakkakadavu (Kunnathunad Panchayat)
- Puthussery Kadavu (Kizhakkambalam Panchayat)
- Infopark Boat Jetty
With the renewed push from the DTPC, Kadambrayar is finally getting the attention it deserves.
